HOW TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE DRY HAIR?
Dry hair is about porosity and your strands’ ability to absorb and retain moisture. You can try floating your hair in water to determine the level of porosity as hair with low porosity will repel moisture when wet and will float while hair with high porosity will sink. The higher the porosity the more damage in the cuticle with the gaps in between allowing too much moisture, causing lifting of the cuticle surface, resulting in frizzy hair. The key to moisturizing dry hair is identifying the level of porosity first.
DRY HAIR FAQS
1. What are dry hair symptoms?
The first symptom of dry hair is the lifting of the scales of the fiber which caused the surface of the hair to feel rough to the touch. This is because the external and internal nutrition structures of the hair breakdown. What follows is frizzy hair, dull hair, hair breakage, and split ends. All of these are common indicators that you need to moisturize dry hair.
2. Why is my hair so dead and dry?
It’s possible that the scalp is dry and does not generate enough natural oils to moisturize the hair. Other reasons for dry hair can be from over brushing, washing hair in water that is too hot, or washing hair too frequently thereby stripping it of essential oils. Other possible causes are not using heat protection when heat styling leading to drying out of lengths and ends, and of course using the wrong products that are intended for other hair types or concerns that are not in line with your hair’s needs.
3. Is dry hair damaged?
Dry hair is not synonymous with damaged hair, although severely dry hair can lead to damaged hair. Dry hair is the strand’s inability to absorb and retain moisture, while damaged hair is the corruption in the structure of the hair fiber itself. An easy test to do on your own head of hair is to gently pull a strand at both ends and see how stretchy it is. If it’s able to expand by around a third and then returns to original length, then it’s healthy. However, if there is no pull, then it’s a sign of damage. If the hair stretches out but does not return to original size, then your hair is dry and in need of moisturization.
4. Can dry hair cause hair fall?
The many reasons for why you could be experiencing dry hair can also be leading to breakage that may be causing hair fall. Breakage of dry hair from aggressive brushing and breakage from over-heat-styling are just some of the common reasons for dry hair turning into falling hair.
5. Can dry hair cause thinning?
When dryness leads to sustained damage, it’s possible to see thinning. Anything that works to erode the hair shaft over time such as use of harsh shampoos, aggressive brushing, excessive drying, as a few examples, can lead to hair thinning over time.
6. Why is curly hair dry?
Curly hair and coily hair is more prone to dryness than straight hair because the natural oils produced by the scalp have a harder time traveling down the shaft of curly, wavy and coily hair compared to straight hair. Therefore, dry curly hair needs extra moisturizing to prevent drying out.
7. Why is my hair so dry even with conditioner?
This depends on the porosity of the hair. Hair that is more porous, in combination with a conditioner that is not moisturizing enough can beget dry hair. Dyed hair and hair with certain textures, such as curly hair, naturally have higher porosity and may require deep conditioning like the usage of hair masks and serums, beyond just using a conditioner alone.
8. Why is my dry hair brittle?
Brittle hair is a common symptom of dry hair, and the most common culprit for this is dryness caused by excessive heat-styling, frequent hair washing, and over-using products with sulfates.
9. Why is my hair dry after bleaching?
Bleaching agents penetrate the hair fiber and weaken the bonds which can lead to loss of color, strength, shine and elasticity, giving hair the appearance of dryness and frizz. Bleached hair needs the most meticulous care and extra moisturization to retain a healthy look and feel.
10. Why is it bad to air dry hair?
Hair is most fragile when its wet, so the longer time that the hair is in the wet state, the more damage can occur. This is especially important when brushing wet hair as it can be more sensitive and prone to breakage. It is a good idea to blow dry hair on a cool air setting to limit this potential time for damage while air drying.
HOW TO TREAT DRY HAIR
1. Wash dry hair less
Frequent washing can strip the moisture from dry hair.
2. Use cleansing conditioner instead or a sulfate-free shampoo
Shampoos with chemicals can dry out hair, cleansing conditioners rely on natural oils to cleanse and conditioner the hair at the same time.
3. Rinse with cool water
Hot water can dry out hair leaving it dehydrated. Cool water can seal the cuticle and lock in moisture.
4. Apply leave-in conditioner
Boost moisture after towel drying.
5. Brush gently
Aggressive brushing can lead to erosion, which can lead to dry hair and damaged hair.
6. Limit heat styling
Blow dry hair on cool temperature setting and protect dry hair from the heat by using heat protecting styling products.
7. Deep condition weekly
Infuse as much moisture as possible with hair masks with high potency of nutrients for nourishing and moisturizing dry hair.
8. Trim your hair
The ends are usually the most dehydrated and brittle parts of dry hair and trimming every 4-6 weeks will keep them looking healthy.
